Confident Parenting

Parents who feel good about themselves are great role models for their children and others. Here are ways to boost your self-confidence, to feel good, and be the best parent you can be:

  • Trust yourself. You are the best judge of what works well for you and your child.
  • Do your research and learn what experts recommend for parenting styles and strategies.
  • Don’t dwell on past mistakes.
  • When others criticize you or your parenting, you can listen, but you don’t have to agree. Let them know you accept what they say, but that you don’t have to agree with them. By accepting, you’re simply saying, “I hear you.” Here are some accepting words you can use to give a little breathing room and avoid arguments.
    • I’ll think about what you said…
    • I can see how you might feel that way…
    • I already discussed this with my doctor and…
  • Know that just because someone chose a parenting style that is different than yours, doesn’t mean it is better or right – just different. A good phrase to remember is, “good for her, not for me!”
  • Don’t put yourself down. Instead of saying, “I can’t do it,” say, “I am going to try to do it – and this is the next baby step I’m going to take to learn how to do it.”
  • Give yourself a pat on the back. Treat yourself how you would treat a friend, with empathy, pride, and respect!

There are no perfect parents. Mothers often expect too much of themselves. Relax and focus on being the best you can be.
