Poisonous Plants

Plants can make a room look great but be sure to keep plants out of reach of your baby. 

If you think your baby ate any part of a plant listed below or any plant you are not sure about, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. 

Houseplants

Here is a list of poisonous houseplants that you might find in your home. Always keep them out of reach of your baby or better yet, remove them from your home entirely. 

  • Amaryllis - Hippeastrum - entire plant, especially the bulb. 
  • Caladium - Caladium - entire plant in flower. 
  • Devil’s Ivy - Scindapsus aureus - entire plant. 
  • Dieffenbachia or Dumbcane –Dieffenbachia - entire plant.
  • Elephant Ears - Colocasia esculenta -entire plant in flower. 
  • English Ivy - Hedera helix - leaves and berries. 
  • Philodendron - Philodendron - entire plant. 
  • Pothos - Epipremnum aureum - entire plant. 
  • Needlepoint Ivy - Hedra - leaves. 
  • Poinsettia - Euphorbia pulcherrima – leaves and stems.
  • Rosary Pea - Abrus precatorius– seeds. 


Garden Plants

Here is a list of poisonous plants that you might find in your garden. Keep them away from your baby. 

  • Bleeding Heart - Dicentra - entire plant. 
  • Buttercups - Ranunculus - entire plant. 
  • Delphinium - Delphinium - entire plant in flower. 
  • Daffodil - Narcissus - entire plant, especially bulbs. 
  • Four O’Clock - Mirabilis jalapa - roots and flowers. 
  • Foxglove - Digitalis purpurea - entire plant.
  • Golden Chain Tree - Laburnumanagyroides - bean like capsules in which seeds are suspended. 
  • Holly - Ilexaquifolium - fruit (ripe). 
  • Hyacinth - Hyacinthus orientalis - bulbs.
  • Hydrangea - Hydrangea - leaves and flowers. 
  • Iris - Iris - entire plant, especially underground stems. 
  • Juniper - Juniperus - berries.
  • Larkspur - Delphinium - entire plant (young) and seeds. 
  • Lily-of-the-Valley - Convallaria majalis  leaves and flowers. 
  • Lobelia - Lobelia - entire plant in flower. 
  • Morning Glory - Convolvulus or Ipomoea– seeds.
  • Monkshood - Aconitum napellus – entire plant especially fleshy roots. 
  • Oaks - Quercus - acorns and leaves. 
  • Poppy - Papaver somniferum - entire plant. 
  • Privet - Ligustrum vulgare - leaves & berries. 
  • Rhododendron - Rhododendron – entire plant. 
  • Rhubarb - Rheum rhabarbarum – leaf blade. 
  • Sedum - Sedum - entire plant in flower. 
  • Snow-on-the-Mountain - Euphorbiamarginata - entire plant in flower. 
  • Star of Bethlehem - Ornithogalumumbellatum - entire plant. 
  • St. John’s Wort - Hypericum perforatum – entire plant. 
  • Tulips - Tulipa - bulbs.
  • Wisteria - Wisteria - seeds and pods.
